Frequently Asked Questions
What is therapy?
Therapy (also called counseling or psychotherapy) is a collaborative process where you work with a licensed therapist to address emotional challenges, develop coping skills, and achieve personal growth. It provides a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without judgment.
Why do people seek therapy?
People come to therapy for many reasons: managing anxiety or depression, navigating major life transitions, improving relationships, processing grief or trauma, building self-confidence, or simply wanting to understand themselves better. You don't need a diagnosis or crisis to benefit from therapy.
What happens during a therapy session?
Each 50-minute session involves open, honest conversation tailored to your needs. I may ask questions to help you explore your thoughts and feelings, offer insights and coping strategies, or help you work through specific challenges. You set the pace and direction of our work together.
How long does therapy take?
Therapy duration varies based on your goals and circumstances. Some clients see meaningful progress in 6-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly check in about your progress and adjust our approach as needed.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, everything we discuss is strictly confidential. I'm legally and ethically bound to protect your privacy. The rare exceptions include imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected child abuse, or court-ordered disclosure. I'll always discuss any concerns about confidentiality with you first.
What are your therapy fees?
Individual therapy: $150 per 50-minute session
Couples/Family therapy: $180 per 50-minute session
Sliding scale: Available based on financial need
If my standard fees aren't affordable, I offer reduced rates when possible. Open Path Collective is another excellent low-cost therapy option.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't directly accept insurance to protect your privacy and give us more flexibility in your treatment. However, you may be able to use out-of-network benefits by submitting a superbill (receipt) that I provide. Contact your insurance company to check your out-of-network coverage before we begin.
What if we're not a good fit?
A strong therapeutic relationship is essential for progress. If you don't feel comfortable or connected, please share your concerns openly. We can work to address any issues, or I'll help you find another therapist who better meets your needs. Your comfort and progress are my priorities.
Can therapy help if I don't have a mental health diagnosis?
Absolutely. Therapy isn't just for mental health conditions—it's valuable for anyone wanting to improve their life. Whether you're dealing with stress, relationship issues, major decisions, personal growth, or life transitions, therapy provides tools and support for positive change.
Do you offer couples and family therapy?
Yes, I work with individuals, couples, and families. Each type of therapy uses different approaches:
Individual therapy: Focus on your personal goals and challenges
Couples therapy: Improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen your relationship
Family therapy: Address family dynamics and improve relationships between family members
